Sadly, we probably all know at least one person who has had cancer. Similarly, you probably know that if you catch cancer early, you’re much more likely to beat it. This is the same when it comes to oral cancer. If you are observant and careful, there are a few things you can look for to identify oral cancer early, and to start treating the problem immediately.

Similarly, some people are more likely to deal with cancer than others. Some of the common issues related with cancer are avoidable, while others simply are not, For example, men are more likely to be diagnosed with cancer than women. Similarly, the odds of having cancer increase after the age of 44. In these instances, there is little you can do. Conversely, habits such as drinking alcohol and smoking increase an individual’s chances of having cancer. Similarly, exposure to sunlight and your diet can affect your odds of dealing with this disease.

However, there are a few signs you can watch for. For instance, if you have a sore throat that doesn’t fade after a few days, notice discoloration in your mouth, experience numbness of your mouth or lips, feel a lump form, or notice a shift in the way your teeth fit together, you could have oral cancer. However, if you notice these symptoms, please don’t panic. These symptoms can also be caused by other issues.

If you have any of these symptoms at all please contact our Dr. Thomas Burke, DMD and Cameron Blyth, DMD. If you would like to learn more about oral cancer or are interested in scheduling an appointment with our team, please feel free to contact Fountains Family Dental Center at 480-359-1483.
